General Election 2024 – Zara Layne, Labour candidate for Harpenden & Berkhamsted

Dear resident,
I am honoured to be standing as the Labour candidate for Harpenden and Berkhamsted. In a brand new constituency, we have the chance to make a positive change on July 4 and steer a new course locally and nationally.
This election represents the opportunity of a generation to turn the page on 14 years of Conservative chaos and elect a mission-drive government who will restore pride and purpose in our country.
As a borough councillor and an experienced caseworker for a sitting Labour MP, I recognise the importance of having elected representatives who genuinely wish to serve their constituents. I believe in the power of communities to work together and bring about fundamental change. I believe in Labour’s five key missions as a way to drive up standards of living, make people feel safe on the streets, protect the National Health Service and embed this nation as a clean energy superpower.
My story
I have loved politics for as long as I can remember. As a single mother to two incredible daughters, I am fundamentally driven by a desire to show them that politics is for everyone, regardless of background or situation. We are all affected by the decisions made in Westminster and local authorities across the country, and by engaging and holding representatives to account, communities and citizens are empowered.
As a borough councillor, I recognise the weight of responsibility that elected office brings and the need to work for all, regardless of political affiliation or voting record.
My future plan
A Labour government will be a mission-led one:
- Get Britain Building again
- Switch on Great British Energy
- Get the NHS back on its feet
- Take back our streets
- Break down barriers to opportunity
